A Picture of Us by Abigail Mader book cover on a photo of the sea

Disclosure: I was given an ARC copy of this eBook for free, this hasn’t affected the opinions in my review. A sapphic novella set on a remote island, read on to find out more about A Picture of Us by Abigail Mader.

The minute I heard about this story on Instagram I knew it was one I wanted to read, so straightaway I signed up to apply to be an ARC reader (thanks Abigial for approving me to get a copy).

Synopsis:

Mia has been offered the job of a lifetime, the lead biologist at a marine conservation centre on a remote island. As Mia and her girlfriend Tash move to start their new life, things aren’t as plane sailing as she would have liked when someone from Mia’s past tries to jeopardise everything she’s worked for, but when things get tricky, Tash is there by her side.

My review:

Rating: 5 ★

The way Mia was chasing her dreams really inspired me, it made me feel emotional right from the off. I loved how Mia and Tash had each others backs while taking this big leap into the unknown. The characters felt relatable and real, their chemistry and togetherness really leapt off the page at you.

This was an inspiring story that resonated with me. I absolutely loved the worldbuilding too, the island this story is set on is definitely one I would love to visit irl (if human into book travel existed – sign me up, get me a house on there)! An island to live on surrounded by trees, the ocean, cute wildlife, with other shops just a boat ride away, that sounds like absolutely one of the most perfect places to live.

One of my favourite quotes was – “Not stuck,” – “Home.” in the context of it too, it was everything. We all want to be not stuck, home right?!

Last but not least this book carried an important message about wildlife, our oceans and how we should protect them. I actually took an online course in marine biology earlier this year so I found those aspects to the story to be really interesting as well.

The ending was brilliantly done, I hope we get to hear more of Mia and Tash’s adventures in the future.

If you enjoy reading uplifting sapphic novellas, then this might be the eBook for you! It’s definitely turned into one of my favourite reads from this year so far. A Picture of Us is being released in eBook format on the 22nd August on Amazon.
